Pangyo transfer facility construction begins: A new era of reducing commuting time between Seoul and Pangyo by 30 minutes and connecting to the highway.

Installation of Transfer Facility on Expressway... The First Step of Traffic Innovation

The commuting time from Seoul to Pangyo Tech Valley 2 is expected to be reduced by 30 minutes. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Korea Expressway Corporation officially announced the start of construction for the Pangyo ex-HUB transfer facility on the Gyeongbu Expressway.

This project will directly install a public transportation transfer space on the expressway's main line and is expected to bring significant changes to the metropolitan transportation system.

The Pangyo ex-HUB project, which includes a metropolitan bus stop and transfer and pedestrian facilities on the Gyeongbu Expressway Pangyo section, aims for completion in 2027. As a result, many users are expected to enjoy a more convenient transportation environment.

Why is Pangyo ex-HUB Necessary?

image

Currently, the metropolitan buses connecting Seoul to Pangyo stop at Pangyo IC (Interchange) and then proceed to Pangyo Station. Passengers then have the inconvenience of transferring to city buses to reach Tech Valley 2.

This complex transfer process can lead to delays of over an hour during commuting hours. For example, the existing route covers a total of 27.4 km from Seoul to Tech Valley 2 via Pangyo IC and Pangyo Station, taking approximately 62 minutes. However, the improved route will cover a total of 22.0 km from Seoul to Tech Valley 2 via Pangyo ex-HUB, shortening the travel time to about 32 minutes.

Once the Pangyo ex-HUB is completed, passengers will be able to disembark directly from the expressway main line and access Tech Valley 2 on foot or by city bus. This will effectively reduce the travel distance and time by 5.4 km and 30 minutes, respectively.

How is the ex-HUB Structured?

The ex-HUB is a system that combines 'expressway' and 'hub', allowing for direct transfers from the expressway.

The recently commenced Pangyo ex-HUB includes various convenient features. First, there is a metropolitan bus stop for boarding and alighting that connects directly to the expressway main line.

Also, city buses and pedestrian connection facilities are available, with easy access via elevators and escalators. Direct connections to Pangyo Tech Valley 2 are possible, and various support facilities and guidance systems for user convenience are also included.

Inside Pangyo Tech Valley 2, there are already 10 city bus routes operated along Startup Road and Dallae-nae Road. This makes regional movement very convenient even after transferring from the expressway.

Expanding Expressway Transfer Facilities Nationwide, Pangyo is a 'Game Changer'

image

The Pangyo ex-HUB is establishing itself as a strategic hub that fundamentally improves the efficiency and accessibility of public transportation beyond being just a simple stop.

Currently, there are a total of 15 expressway transfer facilities operating in South Korea, including sites like Jukjeon (Gyeongbu), Cheonggye tollgate (Seoul Metropolitan First Circular), and Siheung Sky Rest Area. These facilities play a crucial role in providing convenience for public transportation users.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to install additional ex-HUBs in key transfer demand areas, including near the GTX-A line and Incheon Munhak Stadium Station, in addition to Pangyo. For this purpose, they will collaborate with local governments to gradually expand transportation analysis and feasibility studies. If these efforts are completed, a more convenient environment for public transportation users is expected to be provided.

The Future of ex-HUB Transforming the Concept of Commuting

image

The construction of the Pangyo ex-HUB is assessed as a large-scale traffic innovation that fundamentally improves the commuting system between the metropolitan area and key industrial complexes, going beyond simple infrastructure development.

This project is significant as it redefines the expressway not just as a roadway for vehicles but as a vital axis of public transportation.

If such ex-HUBs expand to major hubs nationwide, it is expected to be a crucial turning point for improving citizens' convenience in transportation and achieving balanced regional development.
