Changwon National Industrial Complex, A New Future Where Culture and Industry Meet
Gyeongsangnam-do is actively promoting the 'Landmark Creation Project' for the development of the Changwon National Industrial Complex (hereafter Changwon National Industrial Complex).
This project has expanded to a total of 75 billion won by additionally securing 18.9 billion won in government funds as part of the Culture Leading Industrial Complex initiative, increasing from the originally planned 42.8 billion won.
This inclusion of the Changwon National Industrial Complex in the government's 2024 supplementary budget reflects the success of Gyeongnam Province’s efforts to secure government funds. Such changes are expected to have a positive impact on the local economy.
Expansion from Culture Leading Industrial Complex to Landmark Creation Project
The Changwon National Industrial Complex was selected in March this year for the '2025 Culture Leading Industrial Complex Contest' jointly organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. This marked the start of a project to create a daily experience-based cultural space worth 42.8 billion won.
However, with the recent supplementary budget, the 'thematic space type (landmark creation)' category was also selected, thereby expanding the overall project scale. There are now a total of 10 projects included, with a total budget of 75 billion won, of which 45.67 billion won will be funded by the government.
In particular, the landmark creation project has a total project cost of 32.2 billion won, with government funding of 18.9 billion won and local funds of 13.3 billion won. This project is planned to be carried out over four years from 2025 to 2028. These changes are expected to significantly contribute to the cultural and economic development of the Changwon National Industrial Complex.
What Are the Key Aspects of the Future-Oriented Complex Cultural Space?
Gyeongsangnam-do has announced detailed plans to transform the Changwon National Industrial Complex into a 'future-oriented complex cultural space'.
The main aspects of this project include designing K-Machine and Defense Experience Zones, and integrating digital technologies such as VR (virtual reality), XR (extended reality), and the Metaverse. Additionally, popup stores and experiential cultural spaces will be operated within the industrial complex. Cultural and educational programs will also be organized to attract young workers.
These changes are expected to surpass the traditional concept of the industrial complex and establish itself as a 'future-oriented industrial cultural hub' where culture, advanced technology, and experiential content coexist.
Cultural Reinterpretation of the Machine and Defense-Centered Industrial Complex
The Changwon National Industrial Complex has traditionally played a central role in South Korea's manufacturing industry, focusing on machinery and defense. This landmark project emphasizes the cultural reinterpretation of this industrial identity.
The goal of this project is to transform the complex into a creative space where young people want to stay and visit. Through this, it aims to present a new model where industry and culture harmonize, establishing a model case for other industrial complexes as well.
Gyeongnam Province's Strategic Government Fund Acquisition Activities Lead to Results
Gyeongsangnam-do has repeatedly visited the National Assembly and government departments to highlight the importance of the Changwon National Industrial Complex for this project.
In particular, it worked with local lawmakers to persuade them of the need for a landmark within the industrial complex, the influx effect of youth, and the positive impact on the local economy. Thanks to these efforts, it was able to be reflected in the government's supplementary budget.
Gyeongnam Province stated that based on the government funds secured this time, it plans to actively discover follow-up projects to expand cultural spaces within the industrial complex and establish a youth-friendly ecosystem.
