Background of Gwangandaegyo toll discount implementation

image

Busan City decided to adjust the discount hours in order to resolve the issue of early commuters not being able to benefit from the Gwangandaegyo bridge discount.

This decision reflects complaints arising from the discrepancy between the existing discount hours of 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and the actual commuting hours.

This adjustment will move the morning discount hour one hour earlier, providing more practical benefits to early commuters and shift workers.

Overview of Gwangandaegyo operations

Gwangandaegyo is an eight-lane bridge connecting Daeun-dong in Nam-Gu and U-dong and Jaesong-dong in Haeundae-Gu, Busan. It is one of Busan's key transportation infrastructures, serving a large number of vehicles.

The project spans from 1635-55 Daeun-dong, Nam-Gu, to 1196-16 U-dong, Haeundae-Gu and has a total project cost of approximately 789.9 billion KRW. The toll collection for this bridge began on June 1, 2003, and will continue for 25 years until May 31, 2028.

Operational management is entrusted to the Busan Facilities Corporation, and the tolls are set at 500 KRW for small cars, 1,000 KRW for medium cars, and 1,500 KRW for large and special vehicles. Gwangandaegyo plays an important role in enhancing transportation convenience in Busan.

History of Gwangandaegyo toll discounts

From August 1, 2009, vehicles using Hi-pass receive a 20% discount on tolls during commuting times. Later, starting January 1, 2018, the commuting toll discount was expanded to 50% for all vehicles.

Additionally, from May 26, 2025, the discount hours during commuting will increase from 2 hours to 3 hours.

Busan City plans to continuously explore various policies to enhance transportation convenience for citizens in the future.

Small cars already receive a 50% toll discount under the Road Act. Therefore, double discounts related to this are not possible. Additionally, regular tolls will be charged if the road is used outside of commuting hours, so caution is advised.
