A portion of the old DRMO (U.S. Army Logistics Support Facility) site located at 129-1 Gaegum-dong, measuring 3,590㎡, has been designated as 'Gaegum-dong Rail Sports Park' through the announcement No. 2025-73 made on May 7.
This decision officially allows the area to be used as a sports facility, and the relevant topographical map can be checked on the Land Link website. It is expected that this space will provide various sports activities for local residents in the future.
The DRMO site has been used for storage and incineration of military supplies by the U.S. military since 1973, and was closed in 2008. This site was returned to the government in 2015, with a total area of approximately 29,354㎡.
However, since its closure, the area has been severely contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals, dioxins, etc. From 2018 to 2022, 8,615㎥ of contaminated soil was excavated and purified using thermal desorption methods. This process cost 8.2 billion won from the national budget.
Busanjin-gu is gradually progressing with plans for the utilization of the returned site. By the end of 2023, a multipurpose national sports center with a total floor area of 2,608㎡, consisting of 4 floors above ground and 1 basement floor, is scheduled to be constructed. In addition, the creation of a rail sports park that includes a rail bike track and community sports space will officially begin via this announcement.
Thanks to its close proximity to Gaegum Station on Subway Line 2 and the main roads, as well as the Dongseo Elevated Road, this area boasts excellent transportation accessibility. Furthermore, there are numerous educational, administrative, and commercial facilities nearby, indicating a large potential user base. Once the sports facility is completed, it is expected that the community sports space will expand, and the long-standing urban disconnection issues caused by the abandoned U.S. military base will be resolved in the long run. Additionally, redevelopment in the nearby residential area of Gaegum District 2 is underway, which is likely to have a positive impact on local development.

1. The urban management plan of Busanjin-gu, Busan Metropolitan City is decided and announced simultaneously with the topographical map according to Article 30, Article 32 of the 「National Land Planning and Utilization Act」 and Article 25 of the Enforcement Decree of the same Act, and Article 8(2) of the 「Basic Act on Land Use Regulation」.
