Global Startup Hub Busan, Final Architecture Team Selected from International Design Competition
The plan for the 'Global Startup Hub Busan' at Busan North Port Dock 1 has finally been revealed.
The city of Busan announced that it will select the final architecture team through the international design competition that started in January this year and will officially begin the project.
Journey and Final Selection of the International Design Competition
The international design competition, held from January to May this year, was conducted in two stages.
In the first stage, 37 teams from 11 countries participated in the international nomination application, and in the second stage, 4 teams submitted their works among the 5 nominated teams.
On May 7, the final judging results revealed that the architecture team consisting of OBR (Open Building Research) and KANGBUJON Architects was selected. This competition attracted significant attention with a high competition ratio of 37 to 1.
Strengths of the Final Selected Architecture Team
The selected architecture team received much praise for proposing a future-oriented spatial plan while respecting the architectural heritage of the past.
The design maintained the form of the existing warehouse while being reinterpreted with a modern sensibility, faithfully capturing future value. Additionally, the environmentally friendly elements, considering energy conservation and sustainability, stood out and garnered attention.
Furthermore, their approach of harmonizing with the surrounding environment through meaningful architectural identity, rather than extravagance, left a deep impression. Such an approach contributes to enhancing the value of the building.
Introduction of Major Architecture Teams
Italy's OBR (Open Building Research) is led by Paolo Brescia and Tommaso Principi.
Major works include the Pythagoras Museum in Crotone, the MilanoFiori residential complex in Milan, and the Sabauda Art Museum in Turin.

The representative is KANGBUJON, and major projects include the Social Hall at Busan National University Busan Campus and the planning design of the Busan Opera House.
Future Plans for Global Startup Hub Busan
The city of Busan plans to sign a construction design contract with the selected team from the design competition and aims to complete the detailed design by this second half of the year.
In particular, with the goal of opening in 2026, every administrative effort is being focused on developing the 'Global Startup Hub Busan' into a world-class startup innovation hub.
