A New Hub for Veterinary Services for Pets Opens in Busan and Gyeongnam
The city of Busan is beginning the construction of a new large veterinary hospital to enhance veterinary medical services for pets.
The 'Gyeongsang National University Animal Hospital' is expected to break ground in October 2025 and be completed by June 2027. This hospital will be located on the campus of Dongmyeong University in Nam-gu, Busan, and will become the largest specialized tertiary medical institution for pets in the country.
In particular, it will cover an area 1.6 times larger than Seoul National University's animal hospital, attracting significant attention in the veterinary field. This project is expected to raise the level of veterinary medical services in Busan.
What Facilities Are Included in the University Animal Hospital?
The newly established university animal hospital at Gyeongsang National University will have a total floor area of 9,213㎡, with a land area of 13,300㎡, consisting of 1 basement floor and 4 above-ground floors.
The first floor will feature a 24-hour emergency care center, an imaging center, and general consultation rooms, providing fast and professional medical services.
The second floor will house various internal medicine facilities such as neurology, infectious diseases, and dermatology, as well as intensive care units (ICU) and inpatient rooms.
The third floor will include specialized medical spaces such as surgical operating rooms, dentistry, and rehabilitation medicine, designed to accommodate severe surgical and rehabilitation treatments.
The fourth floor will be utilized for laboratories and student education rooms, functioning as spaces for veterinary education and clinical practice.
In the basement level, there will be a radiation therapy center for cancer treatment and specialized treatment using advanced imaging equipment.
This hospital is being evaluated as having an advanced structure compared to existing animal hospitals at Seoul National University, Chungnam National University, and Jeonbuk National University and is expected to lead the advancement of veterinary medical services for pets.
The Core Axis of Regional Cooperation and Industrial Ecosystem Development
This hospital will serve a role beyond just a clinic. It will have an incubating function in cooperation with the pet studies department of local universities to support entrepreneurship and employment. This is expected to enable the convergence of various fields such as the pet healthcare industry and the development of pet-related technologies. In the future, Busan will play an important role in developing into a hub of the pet industry.
This project, which is promoted through a joint agreement between the city of Busan, Gyeongsang National University, and Dongmyeong University, is significant as a cooperative model between local government and universities. According to the tripartite agreement made in 2022, Dongmyeong University will donate the land, Gyeongsang National University will operate the hospital, and the city of Busan will provide administrative support. This collaboration is expected to positively contribute to the local economy and industrial development.
What Are the Construction and Completion Schedules?
The ongoing project has reached a stage where the urban management plan has been finalized, and the administrative procedures are being completed with a goal of breaking ground in October this year. The city of Busan has started discussions with relevant agencies from January 2025 and has passed the review by the urban planning committee, and it is expected to be completed in June 2027 after going through the announcement and building permit processes.
Once completed, it is expected to play a central role in treating pets suffering from acute and severe diseases in the Busan and Gyeongnam regions. A system will be established to provide a variety of specialized medical services such as hospitalization, surgery, imaging diagnosis, and radiation therapy. With these facilities in place, a significant contribution to the health management of pets in the region is anticipated.
Busan's Veterinary Medical Infrastructure Opens a New Era
The era of 15 million pets has arrived. Pets are now no longer just 'pets,' but true family members.
The recent establishment of the Gyeongsang National University Animal Hospital is an important step toward making Busan a city where citizens and pets can happily coexist. This is regarded as a necessary project for Busan to grow into a hub of the pet industry.
A new medical hub for dogs, cats, and our precious companions is about to be established. This will usher in an era where the health and happiness of pets and their families can be further prioritized.
