The preliminary designation results for the Ministry of Education's Glocal University 30 project in 2025 have been announced. In Busan, Kyungsung University, Busan University of Foreign Studies, and the integrated models of Korea Maritime University and Mokpo Maritime University have been included in the final preliminary designation list.

A total of 18 models were preliminarily selected nationwide, with Busan highlighted as a focal point for regional university innovation by including two individual models and one ultra-regional integrated model. These outcomes demonstrate the global competitiveness that Busan's universities are striving to achieve.




Kyungsung University leaps forward as a K-Culture-centered ‘MEGA Ultra-Immersive Campus’

Kyungsung University has set a goal to develop ultra-immersive content education and industry-academia cooperation models through its MEGA campus, which encompasses the fields of Media, Movie, Entertainment, Gala/MICE, and Arts. This innovative approach focuses on creating new revenue models through convergence with various industries.

Kyungsung University is innovating the educational environment by establishing an ultra-immersive convergence campus. It runs a flexible academic system based on interdisciplinary studies and no fixed year structure, providing students with diverse learning opportunities.

In addition, it has established MEGA labs to create a content-centered creative ecosystem and is committed to cultivating practical talent through industry-academia co-production alliances.

By linking the Busan Ocean Cinema Street with urban regeneration, it promotes fusion with local culture.

Through these efforts, Kyungsung University aims to establish itself as a leading university focused on K-Culture content in Busan.

Busan University of Foreign Studies evolves into a global education hub

Busan University of Foreign Studies has proposed an innovative global university model that connects local and global perspectives, based on its language education capabilities in over 50 countries and a vast amount of overseas cultural information.

Major strategies include the development of an AI-based multilingual education platform and the standardization of foreign language education. Additionally, it plans to build and open a multilingual data center to strengthen its role as an information hub. It is also pursuing a multi-generational friendly education model through Age-Tech related foreign language education for the senior generation. Collaborating with local industries to provide multilingual business solutions is another important goal.

Through these efforts, Busan University of Foreign Studies anticipates playing a connective role between regional talent and enterprises aiming for the global market.




Korea Maritime University and Mokpo Maritime University, the integrated leaders in the marine industry

Korea Maritime University and Mokpo Maritime University have been preliminarily designated as an ultra-regional innovation campus integrating marine capabilities in the eastern, western, and southern sea areas based on the 'One Country One Maritime University' model.

The Busan campus focuses on advanced marine technologies such as autonomous navigation and smart logistics, while the Mokpo campus is specialized in eco-friendly ships and maritime professional education. These two campuses plan to establish a comprehensive talent development system that spans from high school to university and into industry.

They will also not spare efforts to support high-value industry development through the SEA4 alliance, joint graduate schools, and testbed campuses.

This direction aims to enhance the global competitiveness of Korea’s marine industry, set as a maritime hub university to realize the convergence of education, industry, and technology.




Other notable preliminary designation cases

This preliminary designation has attracted attention to several universities, including those in Busan. Chungnam National University and Gongju National University are presenting an ultra-regional national university integration model, while Chosun University and Chosun University of Nursing are showcasing private integrations within the Gwangju region.

Additionally, Dongshin University, Chodang University, and Mokpo Science University are conducting regional tailored talent development and educational reforms based on industrial demands through a Jeonnam alliance model. They aim to contribute to the development of their regions through a region-industry-academia cooperation model.

Upcoming schedule and Busan city's full support

Designated universities must submit their execution plans to the Ministry of Education by August 2025, with about 10 universities expected to be finally designated in September.

Busan city plans to enhance the integrated support system among local governments, universities, and industries in line with these plans. To this end, a dedicated task force will be operated, and various supports are anticipated, including jointly preparing execution plans in connection with regional development plans.

Busan Mayor Park Hyung-joon emphasized, “We will spare no effort in actively supporting the Glocal University to establish itself as a hub of industry-academia cooperation leading regional innovation.”
