Establishment of the 5th Metropolitan Transportation Implementation Plan for Daegu and Gyeongbuk, Expanding Rail Infrastructure
The metropolitan transportation system in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk region is expected to further develop.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Metropolitan Transportation Committee (Metropolitan Committee) held a meeting on May 9th at the Daegu Technopark to establish the '5th Metropolitan Transportation Implementation Plan (2026~2030)'.
During this meeting, various new projects aimed at supporting the growth of the metropolitan economic living zone in Daegu and Gyeongbuk were discussed. These movements are expected to have a positive impact on regional development.
Main Contents of the Metropolitan Transportation Implementation Plan for Daegu and Gyeongbuk Region
The Metropolitan Committee is working to expand and improve traffic facilities in the metropolitan area through the legally established Metropolitan Transportation Implementation Plan, which is drawn up every five years. This plan focuses primarily on the Daegu metropolitan area and Gyeongbuk's cities such as Gumi, Gyeongsan, and Yeongcheon.
Expansion of Daegu Rail Infrastructure
Last year, the Ansim-Hayang Line, a metropolitan rail line that extends the city subway for the first time in local urban areas, was opened, providing stable service in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk region. This line includes three stations across a total distance of 8.9 km from Ansim Station to Hayang Station, significantly reducing travel time from 60 minutes to 32 minutes between Dongdaegu and Hayang.
Gyeongsangbuk-do is also promoting the extension of Daegu Line 1 to Yeongcheon, taking advantage of the opening of the Ansim-Hayang Line. This project aims to connect an additional 5.77 km from Hayang Station to Yeongcheon City and will feature the installation of two new stations. Currently, feasibility studies and the establishment of a basic plan are underway, with future development potential expected.
Promotion of New Metropolitan Transport Projects in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Region
Daegu Metropolitan City announced the status of the existing ten projects included in the 4th Metropolitan Transportation Implementation Plan and requested the addition of one more metropolitan road.
Meanwhile, Gyeongsangbuk-do proposed to include a total of 13 new projects in the 5th plan, in addition to three existing projects. These new projects include nine metropolitan rail projects, three metropolitan road projects, and one transfer center.
Review and Implementation Schedule for New Projects
The Korea Transport Institute recently announced the results of the review of 14 new projects proposed in the Daegu area at a meeting. They shared future implementation plans, including economic feasibility analysis (B/C), discovery of new projects, consultations with local governments, and public hearings.
The Metropolitan Committee emphasizes organic cooperation to ensure that Daegu and Gyeongbuk grow as a closely connected metropolitan economic living zone and plans to support their development as regional hubs in competition with the metropolitan area. These efforts are expected to contribute to the revitalization of the local economy.
Future Schedule and Outlook
The Metropolitan Committee will start collecting opinions regionally, beginning with a meeting in Daegu, followed by Daejeon on May 14, and the metropolitan area in June.
This meeting is being held as part of the establishment of the 5th Metropolitan Transportation Implementation Plan, which is expected to accelerate the expansion of rail infrastructure and the formation of metropolitan economic zones in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk region.
